BOEKE OOR DIE REGVERDIGINGSLEER

Inleiding

Calvyn, soos Luther, beskou die regverdigingsleer as die spilpunt waarom die ware godsdiens draai:

“Dit is dus ’n vraagstuk waarna ons nou dieper ondersoek moet instel en ons moet dit so deurvors dat ons in gedagte hou dat dit die belangrikste spil is om ons godsdiens staande te hou en dat ons daarom groter aandag en sorg daaraan moet bestee. Want as jy nie eerste van alles onthou watter plek jy by God beklee en wat sy oordeel oor jou is nie, het jy geen basis waarop jy jou saligheid kan vestig en geen fondament waarop jy jou godsvrug tot God kan rig nie. Maar die noodsaaklikheid van hierdie kennis sal uit die kennis self beter skitter.” (Institusie 3.11.1)

Dr. JG Feenstra beskryf die regverdiging as volg:

Die regverdigmaking is ‘n regterlike daad van God waardeur Hy die skuldige sondaar vryspreek terwille van die verdienste van Christus en reg gee op die ewige lewe. Dit is nie ‘n etiese (sedelike) maar ‘n juridiese (regterlike) daad van God. Wanneer ‘n dief deur die magistraat vrygespreek word omdat daar gebrek aan bewyse teen hom is, is hy juridies vry, maar het hy nog nie eties ‘n eerlike mens geword nie.

In die HK Sondag 23 bely ons oor die regverdiging:

Hoe is jy regverdig voor God? (vr. 60).

Antwoord: Alleen deur ‘n ware geloof in Jesus Christus só dat God – al klaag my gewete my ook aan dat ek teen al die gebooie van God swaar gesondig en geeneen daarvan gehou het nie en dat ek nog gedurigdeur tot alle boosheid geneigd is my nogtans, sonder enige verdienste aan my kant, uit louter genade die volkome genoegdoening, geregtigheid en heiligheid van Christus skenk en toereken asof ek nooit sonde gehad of gedoen het nie, ja, asof ek self alle gehoorsaamheid volbring het wat Christus vir my volbring het, wanneer ek so ‘n weldaad met ‘n gelowige hart aanneem
